Encyclopedias: 'Executive summaries' of an area of research getting you up to speed quickly on important research findings, leading researchers, discussions/critiques of theoretical models, and methodologies used. The typical 2-5 page summary is followed by a bibliography leading you to the original articles, books, etc to continue your research.

Encyclopedia of Social Psychology
Handbooks: Similar to encyclopedias but more focused on a specific area, and each 'executive summary' is chapter length with more in-depth coverage of the field. Handbooks typically have 5-10 pages of citations at the end of the summary - a significant boost to finding the citations you need for your research!
